Tyaragah Ministers response for Byron's Official Nude Beach Closure:
I refer to your email to the Minister for Climate Change, Minister for Energy, Minister for the Environment and Minister for Heritage, the Hon Minister Sharpe MLC, regarding the Clothing Optional Area (COA) within Tyagarah Nature Reserve. Your email was referred to the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) for reply.
As you may be aware, NPWS will close the COA within Tyagarah Nature Reserve from 30 August 2024.
Further stakeholder consultation has occurred since NPWS determined that a large section of the Tyagarah COA is within Tyagarah Nature Reserve.
On 27 March 2024, NPWS conducted a workshop with key stakeholders, including representatives from Northern Rivers Naturists (formerly Byron Naturists) and the Australian Naturist Federation. The workshop provided a forum for participants to share their perspectives on the current COA and for further discussion about potential alternative locations. The importance of public safety in and around the area was a strong theme. An appropriate alternative location on NPWS estate was not identified. Many attendees expressed the view that the current COA at Tyagarah was unsafe or culturally inappropriate.
On 26 June 2024, NPWS sent workshop notes, including written submissions, to Byron Shire Council for its consideration. NPWS also informed Council of a willingness to participate in any future discussions where an identified parcel of land, with potential to serve as a COA, adjoins NPWS estate.
Following stakeholder consultation and mindful consideration, NPWS determined to close the COA from 30 August 2024.
